This week the UK Government announced that homeowners in England and Wales will be offered subsidies of £5,000 from April 2022 to help them to replace old gas boilers with low carbon heat pumps, however the budget is too low and the strategy not ambitious enough.
The new Clean Heat Grant is part of the government’s £3.9bn plan to reduce carbon emissions from heating homes and other buildings. It is expected that no new gas boilers will be sold after 2035 with all properties having renewable heating in the near future.
Ministers have stated that the subsidises will make heat pumps a comparable price to a new gas boiler. But the £450m being allocated for the subsidies over three years will only cover a maximum of 90,000 pumps, so be quick and get your free quote from our team to apply!!!
Head of science at Friends of the Earth, Mike Childs, said the number of heat pumps that the grants would cover “just isn’t very much” and meant the UK would not meet its aim of installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028.
“Investment will drive down the cost of heat pumps, and technical innovation plus skills training is a part of this, but so is scale. These grants will only incentivise the best-off households.”
Greenpeace UK’s climate campaigner, Caroline Jones, said the government needed to provide more money to speed up the switch from gas boilers to heat pumps. A clearer signal would have been a phase-out of new boilers before 2035.”
What Is A Heat Pump?
Air source heat pumps are a remarkably clean and efficient source of producing heating and hot water for domestic properties and commercial sites.
Heat pumps work by extracting warmth from the air, the ground, or water, a bit like a fridge operating in reverse. These systems are powered by electricity, so if you have a low-carbon source of electricity, such as solar energy, they provide greener heating.
However, many houses will require an upgrade to their energy efficiency, including insulation, before installing one.
At Hero Renewables, we are a national, award winning company enabling communities and business to aid the UK’s transition to a green economy. Sharing our expert knowledge and renewable systems with you, ensuring your home or business stays warm, cosy and energy efficient with renewable energy.
