An influential and effective group of MPs in the UK have sent a letter to the chancellor Rishi Sunak pleaded him, to use the approaching Covid-19 recovery package to enhance low-carbon industries.
Mr Sunak has been the Conservative MP for Richmond in Yorkshire since 2015. He was appointed Chancellor of the exchequer just four weeks before the 2020 budget, which is one of the main events in the calendar for the UK Treasury.
The chairs of the business, energy and industrial strategy (BEIS) committee and the environmental audit committee (EAC) have advised Sunak that infrastructure and investment decisions made in the coming months will be “critical” to building the UK’s resilience to climate change.
The committee chairs Darren Jones and Philip Dunne argued that a net-zero-aligned economy recovery could establish the UK as a climate leader ahead of its presidency of the G7 and COP26 climate conference next year, while stimulating the economy, generating jobs, and improving public health and safety.
Philip Dunne says: “The decisions made during this parliament on infrastructure and investment will be critical in determining whether we lead the world in forging an innovative net-zero economy. That is why my committee has today announced a new inquiry focused on greening the economic recovery.”
Mr Jones is due to lead an inquiry into the government’s climate progress at a hearing this Thursday following a report from the Committee on Climate Change, the government’s official climate advisers, which advised last week that the UK is sinking behind on its climate targets.
Within the letter, Mr Dunne and Mr Jones also added that, “In 2021 the UK will be hosting COP26 and will also hold the G7 Presidency. This presents a unique opportunity for the UK to lead the world in the green recovery and demonstrate how ambitious environmental standards and climate-proofed infrastructure can deliver greater prosperity and wellbeing for all.”
