Phil first started his career in engineering by taking a full-time course in college. He attended West Cheshire college in Chester, where he completed a 2 year course in electrical electronic’s and mechanical engineering. After finishing college, Phil took a year out skiing as he travelled the world skiing down some of the most famous mutation such as the Davos and Verbier in Switzerland as well as the Chamonix in France. Phil believed that undergoing an apprenticeship in engineering would be the best career option for him.
Within his apprenticeship, Phil learned how to install some of the most complex boilers for both domestic and commercial properties. Additionally he also completed installations for bathrooms and kitchens before working for Hero. Phil has been a qualified engineer for over 6 year now and has spent a third of his career at Hero Renewables.
Living in a 3-bedroom detached bungalow in the urban area of Hungerford in Berkshire, a previous customer was having an air source heat pump with radiators combined with a Solar PV system in their home, so that they could be more environmental by powering his home with renewable energy.
After Phil completed all of his staff training, he was assigned to the project in Berkshire where he worked with our other engineers Greg and James to install an 8.5kW Mitsubishi Ecodan heat pump and a 12 panel solar system that was manufactured by JA smart.
Phil got his hands dirty on his first job for the company as he helped to install the heat pump, including a pre-plumbed 250-litre hot water cylinder and buffer tank.
Once all the systems were installed, tested and commissioned by Hero it meant that the customer was able to power their home with Renewable energy and gave Phil the confidence to go on and complete more than 120 jobs since joining in the Autumn of 2018.

Which Is Your Favourite Renewable Product To Install And Why?
“For me, it has to be either an air source or ground source heat pump as when you have plenty of room to work with, you are able to install some really neat pipe works, plus a well laid out plant room looks brilliant in any home.”
What Renewable Energy Product Are You Most Skilled Or Qualified To Install?
“As I went to college to study electrical electronic’s and mechanical engineering and given the number of years I have worked in the plumbing industry, I believe that I’m most skilled to install an air source heat pump. Mainly the Mitsubishi model as it’s perfect for domestic properties and a lot of our customer prefer this model.”
Which Was Your Most Memorable Job You Completed?
“All my jobs in Scotland have been memorable as every time I travel there the views and surrounding in the Highlands are amazing, but I think installing the heat pump on the houseboat on the Thames is probably my most memorable job as it’s the first time the company has ever installed a heat pump on a boat”.
