Battery storage units are an innovative design made to harness our goal to transition into a fully renewable economy, but what is a battery storage unit? How do they work? Why should you consider investing in one? By the end of this blog you will find yourself educated on Battery storage units and will know the difference between the Sonnen Batterie and the Tesla Powerwall 2.
If you have solar panels on your property, and you are not constantly using the energy in which they are producing, the energy produced while it is not being used gets sent to the national grid, on the 31stof March this year, the feed In tariff was stopped, which paid you a percentage for your electrical generation. So therefore, you no longer receive any money for the unused energy that you produce and give to the national grid, battery storage is now the most efficient way to store your energy and contribute to a greener future.
You may think that battery storage units are huge, un-efficient units that are going to take up too much room in your home and not benefit you much at all, however, battery storage units really allow you to go a step further to being a more renewable household/ company, the units themselves, are around 1150mm x 755 mm x 155 mm similar to a small bookshelf, the models are slender enough to mount onto a wall without being obstructive, but large enough to store all of the energy that you need.
Battery storage technology is now around 80%-90% efficient for newer lithium ion devices such as the Tesla Powerwall 2, these rely on a li-ion technology which is suited for some more mobile applicants.
How do they work?
Battery storage systems are an innovative design which are advanced enough to store large amounts of energy that solar panels create, this energy is stored rather than sent to the national grid, so you can then use it when needs be, for example: if you were to fit a battery storage unit into your home and you’re away throughout the day, then there is minimal demand for electricity, your battery storage unit would store the energy that your solar panels have been generating rather than sending it to the national grid. The battery storage unit stores the unused energy for when you return home that evening or for when it’s needed the most, for example if there was a power cut in your street, the power in your house would not go out because the stored energy from your battery storage unit would power your home.
At Hero Renewables, we offer 2 types of battery storage available.
The Tesla Powerwall 2, which boasts double the capacity of its original modeleing 6.4kWh, and it provides efficient storage for both domestic and commercial properties. The Powerwall 2 detects grid outages and automatically becomes your homes main energy source, it integrates with solar to store excess energy generated during the day and makes it available as and when you need it, minimising reliance on the national grid. Tesla have designed the Powerwall 2, so it is very compact and simple, it is an automatic system and requires no maintenance. You can seamlessly monitor and automatically manage your Powerwall and solar panels with the Tesla app.
We also offer the Sonnen Batterie Eco, Sonnen Batterie Hybrid and the Sonnen Batterie Pro.
The Sonnen Batterie eco is brilliant for those who want the greatest possible flexibility, it is not bound to any particular photovoltaic system size, it can also be easily connected to other power sources and is compatible with a unit or a fuel cell.
The Sonnen Batterie hybrid provides maximum cost efficiency as the system also includes the inverter for your photovoltaic system, this eliminates the need for an external device to convert the Direct Current (DC) from the roof into the Alternating Current (AC) for your house. This brings down the total costs of a photovoltaic system and SonnenBatterie, the system is also more compact and efficient.
The Sonnen Batterie pro is the new standard in commercial operations, the battery storage unit offers maximum self-sufficiency, capacity and performance. Obviously, companies require more energy than your home, three Sonnen Batteries can be combined to form a larger capacity storage solution. The Sonnen Batterie Pro operates with larger photovoltaic systems; therefore, it is suitable for commercial buildings with larger solar arrays.
SonnenBatteries are designed to ensure that you use all of the energy that your solar panels produce for you, the Sonnen Community then ensures that if you need additional energy for your home, you will be able to receive it from other community members. Sonnen wants to connect people who generate their own energy into a large community who can then share their clean electricity with one another or alternatively thanks to the Sonnen modular system if you need to increase your battery storage, you can just by purchasing a battery module and increasing your storage amount.
Solar battery systems are a fantastic investment in the sustainable future to become energy independent, you will not have to pay for unclean energy from the national grid if you chose to have a solar battery system installed into your home because of the innovative modern design which allows you to store and save the energy that your solar panels produce and you don’t use.
- Using green energy solutions such as solar power helps to reduce the independence on fossil fuels.
- Using your power as and when you want/ need it.
- Increased resiliency
- No longer have to pay for energy from the national grid
- 100% of electricity is generated by your solar panels (unless you need to use a diesel generator as a back-up or economy 4 tariff)
Is battery storage right for you?
If you already have solar panels fitted in your home, then a battery system would definitely be worth looking into because you will be able to save and store all of the excess energy you paid your solar panels to make, and use it as and when you need to.
