Shell Energy increases their Smart Export Guarantee tariff, only days after being ridiculed for their opening tariff which was barely above the requirement.

Shell Energy initially launched a pilot tariff at 0.001p per kWh, which found itself placed last of all the energy suppliers coming nowhere near other companies. It was that low, it was barley just above the requirement, that tariff needed to be above 0p.*

After the release of other utility companies SEG tariff’s, it came to mind that shell garage needed to match other suppliers. A cynic might suggest that Shell Energy, released their token tariff to avoid complaints from Ofgem and to gauge the level of competition from other utility providers.

They Increased their tariff by 3.499p kWh, which see their tariff rise 6 places higher now in the league tables. Shell Energy is now beating British gas whose tariff is 1.5p kWh, and find themselves joint with SEE and EDF who have the same tariff of 3.5p kWh.

The question that should now be on consumers’ minds now is watching the reaction from British Gas, will they increase their tariff? Will any of the competitors change or increase their tariff as well? If so, then the Government’s gamble of passing the cost to utility companies to increase competition may pay dividends to Solar PV owners.
