A major gas network failure has left thousands of homes, schools and businesses in the Falkirk area are without heating in freezing temperatures.

Engineers have been drafted in from around the country and are going door-to-door visiting more than 8,000 affected customers handing out portable heating and cooking equipment.

Gas infrastructure company SGN said homes in Bainsford, Carron, Carronshore, Larbet, Langless, New Carron Village, Skinflats and Stenhousemuir were affected. They are working to restore supplies as quickly as possible. Denis Kerby from SGN, said ,”It could be Friday, it could even creep into the weekend – that is really the worst-case scenario”.

By Sunday evening, SGN engineers had turned off gas supplies to more than 3,000 homes with an engineer now due to visit every property to check the supply. The loss of Gas is due to a fault with their gas governor, which is a piece of equipment that regulates pressure within the gas network, ensuring the gas reaches your home at the correct pressure.

This event follows a major Gas leak near to our own head office, Hero House, which was forced to evacuate due to a major gas leak caused by a third party on Thursday 21st November. The Gas leak near to Hero House, resulted in the evacuation of homes and a number of other local businesses nearby and forced many to close until the cordon was opened again a considerable time later.

These incidents though geographically miles apart are a timely reminder about the many negatives that Gas has. Jill Oldham, Managing Director said, “Although Hero House is powered and heated by Renewable technology, we were still affected by this incident. The irony that we, a national renewable energy company were forced to evacuate due to a gas leak is not lost on my team and I. These major incidents are a timely reminder for all that renewable energy alternatives are a far safer option than traditional fossil fuels”.
