12 Dec Is now the perfect time to upgrade your Solar PV System?
With way over a million households in the UK investing in solar panels, 11GW in total thus far. Solar energy has not only become a social trend, but it has become a key part of the UK’s energy mix. The huge global uptake into solar technology has driven investment in the field, resulting in smarter, more innovative systems being developed over the years. Let us fill you in.
One company revolutionising solar technology is SolarEdge. They are an international manufacturing super power of solar inverters, power optimisers, monitoring software and much more. SolarEdge have revolutionised the way power is harvested and managed in a solar photovoltaic system.
The below video is an overview of how SolarEdge are making solar panel systems smarter.
Increasing the yield of a PV system, therefore means you will ultimately be generating more electricity to use in your home, to export to the National Grid, or even to store in a home battery, either way making additional savings and/or earnings to the owner of the system. It opens new avenues to homes or businesses that before may not have been ideally situated to make the most of solar power, such as an East/West split roof.
*Installation date May ’16, data taken – December ’16.
The PV array above was installed by Hero Renewables back in May, and consists of 16 Panasonic panels with a SolarEdge inverter and optimisers as well as a Tesla Powerwall. This data has been taken from the SolarEdge monitoring portal.
The figures show the overall generation since the installation, the two panels on the far left of the system suffer from some shading during the day, but with optimisers installed this means the rest of the system performs as normal. After some quick estimations it’s clear that the PV system has produced an additional 517kWh, which is around 29% extra production if the system had not had SolarEdge technology installed from the start.
All of this can be monitored remotely on any smart device such as your mobile phone or tablet. To find out more about how the monitoring works, watch the video below.
As well as inventing new innovative technologies, SolarEdge and solar companies Los Angeles have also improved on existing parts of a traditional system, such as the inverter which is used to convert DC power generated by solar panels, into AC power for use in the home. The SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter was the winner of the highly respected 2016 Intersolar award and it breaks the mould of traditional inverters. The HD-Wave technology inverter is able to synthesise a clean sine wave, which leads to a significant reduction in the magnetics and heavy cooling elements. This results in a 99% weighted efficiency, which offers 33%-50% less losses than its competitors. See more below.
Why might now be the best time to upgrade? If you’ve already had PV panels installed for some time, then your inverter’s warranty may be coming to an end. The 25-year warranty that comes with the SolarEdge inverter and optimisers, will see you through to the end of your Feed-In Tariff payments and beyond. In addition, by having SolarEdge installed you will be future-proofing your system by being able to install a home battery, such as the Tesla Powerwall, further down the line.
A fully installed SolarEdge system including the inverter, optimisers and monitoring can be retrofitted to your existing PV system by Hero Renewables at only £3500, available UK wide.
